Queen Elizabeth II’s first openly gay footman left the job and it’s supposedly because he was so popular.
After news came out in June that the queen’s new footman was 21-year-old Ollie Roberts, it was quickly discovered that Roberts was openly gay. Now it seems that media attention has become Roberts’s downfall (or rather, downgrade).
The Sun reports that Roberts, who previously served in the Royal Air Force, has stepped down from his position as the personal footman to the monarch. This job required that Roberts live on the grounds of Buckingham Palace and travel with the Queen wherever she goes.
Now, Roberts has been demoted to the position of a regular footman.
A source told the tabloid newspaper that Roberts was “overdoing the press stuff.”
“They told him his profile was becoming too high and he wasn’t there to draw attention to himself,” said the anonymous source before adding, “He thought about it for a couple days and then decided he should quit. He feels badly let down when he was proud to be gay in such a good job.”
In addition, Roberts has deleted his Instagram profile. Neither Roberts nor Buckingham Palace have chosen to comment on the situation.
